Mammoth Mountain’s Main Lodge Redevelopment Plan Up for Public Comments,

Massive redesign planned starting in a few years

Times Staff Report

The Notice of Preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Report/environmental Impact Statement for the Mammoth Main Base Redevelopment Project is now available for public review.

A public scoping meeting will be held in the Town Council Chambers (Suite Z) in Mammoth Lakes (above the Chocolate Factory in the Vons/minaret Mall on the second floor) on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. to inform interested parties about the project, and to provide agencies and the public with an opportunity to provide comments on the scope and content of the EIR/EIS.

The project requires analysis pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. The Town or Mammoth Lakes and the Forest Service have determined that the project may result in potentially significant environmental effects and, as such, will prepare a joint EIR/EIS for the project. The Town and Forest Service will serve as the lead agencies for CEQA and NEPA compliance, respectively.

The NOP is available for public review online at: and

Background: In 2020, a land exchange to allow for private ownership and redevelopment of approximately 35 acres at the base of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (MMSA) Main Lodge area was completed (see Mammoth Base Land Exchange https://

In 2021, a conceptual plan for redevelopment of the Main Base was submitted to the

Town, and a joint Town Council and Planning and Economic Development Commission (PEDC) workshop was held in June 2021 (see Past Meetings, below). Subsequently, a MOU was executed between the

Town, USFS, and applicant for the preparation of a joint Environmental Impact Report/environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS). An EIR/EIS is the required environmental review for this project under State and

Federal law.

During 2022, the applicant continued to work with the USFS and the Town to prepare for formal application submittal to the Town. In September 2022, a specific plan application (DZA 22-001, GPA 22-001) was submitted.
