Starr has long road to recovery after bike accident

By Grace Clark

Come one, come all, you lovers of fun (and those tender of heart) to the fundraiser of the year!

We are thrilled to invite you to a day of pouring our love on Dana Starr at the June Lake Brewery this Sunday, Sept. 26, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will be a day to shine as brightly for her as she has for us!

Enjoy a day of laughter, love, raffles, prizes, food and JLB beer, whilst shuffling your feet to one of our local favorite bands, Boyzntha Woods.

Here’s why you should come on out, for those of you who don’t yet know Dana or this portion of her story:

Dana has been a beautiful member of Mammoth Lakes since 2000, contributing to our community since day one.

She wore various proverbial hats as she worked her way through nursing school. In fact, that’s when I had the honor of first meeting her and calling her friend, while we were working together at the Whitebark, slinging food and drink in unison. Those were the good ‘ol days!

She commuted back and forth while attending University of Nevada Reno and began her nursing career in 2008, working for both Bishop and Mammoth hospitals.

On July 31, Dana and a friend set out for a day in the dirt as is quite typical during our cherished summer months here in Mammoth Lakes. She decided to “boss” (this is our fun word for “conquer”) one of the grand features in the park and ended up over the handlebars, as we’re all too often used to, leaving her without feeling or movement from the neck down.

Though she was wearing full protective gear, her injuries were serious, and resulted in a fractured c3, c4, t5 and a burst fracture of the t6 along with multiple broken ribs.

She was airlifted to Renown Trauma Center where she was diagnosed with Central Cord Syndrome and was admitted into the ICU for eight days.

On day nine, Dana was transferred to the Renown Rehabilitation Hospital, where she is currently continuing to work very hard toward her recovery and healing with the greatest determination and hopeful heart.

June Lake Brewery has been gracious beyond belief in hosting this event and donating a portion of the proceeds to the fundraiser.

Many local shops, restaurants, hotels and businesses of all types have kindly donated in order to make this day especially fun and colorful. We couldn’t be more grateful for their generosity. Indeed, we acknowledge the long road ahead for Dana and Brent but we know that determination, hope and love will help carry them and know they have told me to try to express their immense gratitude to you for your support.

So with that, come dance, eat, drink, try your raffle luck and be merry with us at Dana’s fundraiser!
