Mammoth’s Town Council race still unsettled

Only six votes separated third place candidates Rice and Truax at press time

The race for the third place on the Mammoth Lakes Town Council dais was still too close to call with the top two contenders separated by only six votes as the Times went to press Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 22.

Candidate Amanda Rice was holding on to the third Town Council open seat but barely, coming in at 989 votes or only six votes ahead of candidate Betsy Truax with 983 votes at press time, with at least a few more ballots to count before the vote is formally certified on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at noon (see below for a link to updated counts). Although it was unclear at press time exactly how many valid ballots would arrive in time to be counted for the certification, Elections Office personnel said there might be enough to change the Town Council race for the third spot on the dais if every one of them was from Mammoth and if every one of those was for either Rice or Truax; a possibility, they said, but not quite a probability.

That all said, at press time the race for the third seat could not be called; the Times will update this story as soon as possible.

Mammoth Lakes Candidates Chris Bubser and John Wentworth were assured of a place at the dais at press time, coming in first and second place respectively, with 1,070 votes for Bubser and 1,021 for Wentworth; enough votes to keep them at the dais even if a few more votes came in for them or anyone else in the race between press time and the Nov. 23 certification, Mono County Elections office personnel said Tuesday.

The Mammoth Unified School District race

was also settled at press time, with candidates Marty Thompson and Chelsea Nash edging out six other candidates to take the two open seats.

The Mono County Office of Education two open seats will be filled by Drea Perry and incumbent Dave Titus, who bypassed incumbent Sue Bouska to sit on the Board of Trustee’s dais.

The total turnout for Mono County at press time was 59.9 percent of all registered voters, or 4,623 ballots cast, which is about double the state’s rate of turnout for this election, and one of the top turnout rates in the state.
